Incoming first term council member brings years of public service experience
A 27-year resident of West Valley, Lang brings more than 13 years of experience on the West Valley City Tree Commission and 10 years as a member of the planning commission.
Lang said she decided to run for the open city council seat because she loves living in West Valley and wants to continue to serve the community.
“I’m really proud I live in West Valley City,” she said. “I like being involved, and I want to contribute.”
Lang now fills the council seat vacated by former City Councilmember Russell Brooks who decided not to run for re-election in 2011. She will serve a four-year term through 2015.
Lang and her husband Brian have raised four children, all of whom attended local West Valley City public schools. Since 1983, the couple has owned and operated a local business, Oakbridge Greenhouse, near their home.
Lang said her experiences as a local business owner have given her valuable insights that she will bring as she serves on the council. She said owning a local business lets her constituents meet with her almost any time to speak with her about city issues.
“We do a lot of local business, so I’ve learned a lot,” she said.
Lang said during her term she would work to improve the image of West Valley City.
“Not everybody perceives West Valley City as a nice place,” Lang said.
She said the city has much to offer local residents and to recommend it to people from neighboring cities, such as thriving local businesses and good people who have much to contribute to the community.
Lang said she will also make it a priority to represent people living in her district, which consists of a few commercial areas mixed into a larger number of single-family, older residences that house longtime owners.
Lang said she will serve the interests of her district by supporting economic development while protecting the interests of residents.
“You want new growth, but you want to take care of the people who’ve been here and contribute [to our community],” Lang said.
The District 3 area of West Valley City is encompassed within borders drawn at approximately 3100 South to 4700 South on the north and south sides, and from 4000 West to 4800 West from east to west.
