Hunter, Granger send runners to state cross country meet

Hunter High had six representatives at this year’s state 5A cross country championships, which were held Oct. 19 at Sugar House Park. Three members from both the boys and girls teams qualified, though Hunter didn’t have a full team entry.

In boys, the top finisher was junior Joey Mathisen, who cracked the top 20 and placed 19th overall in a time of 16:21.9 for the 3-mile course. American Fork’s MacKenzie Morrison won the race at 15:22.4. Also from Hunter were senior Jared Thomas, who finished in 110th place at 19:02.3, and junior Skyler Anderson, 119th at 19:27.7.

For the girls, junior Shathem Scheid led the way with a 62nd-place finish in a time of 21:33.7. Davis High’s Shea Martinez won the race at 18:28.0. Senior Heidi Manser was 89th at 22:47.0, and senior Kaleisha Foy placed 92nd at 22:51.6.

In 4A boys, Cyprus senior Mike Mudrow was the only Pirate who qualified for state. He finished in 94th place in a time of 17:51.0. Timpanogos’ Jacob Heslington won the race at 15:39.5. Cyprus also had one girl qualifier, as junior Stacy Olsen finished in 130th place in a time of 23:55.9. Kelsey Braithwaite of Box Elder won the girls’ title at 17:36.4.

Granger did not qualify any runners for the state finals.
