Los Tigres Del Norte to play Maverik Center
Los Tigres Del Norte will perform at the Maverik Center in West Valley City on Saturday, Aug. 20. Jorge Hernández originally started the group with his brothers and cousins. When they were still in their teens they began recording after having moved from Rosa Morada, Sinaloa, Mexico to San Jose, Calif. in the late 1960s.
In 1974, Los Tigres Del Norte released "Contrabando y Traición" ("Contraband and Betrayal"). The song quickly became a hit on both sides of the border inspiring a series of movies and launching one of the most remarkable careers in Spanish-language pop music. The band has continually chronicled the real-life stories of love and hardship experienced by the immigrant community. Numerous tales incorporated into their songs have been passed on directly by their fans. This ability to listen to their fans post-concert and tell via their recordings is one of the main contributors to their continued success. They simply connect with their fans at the highest of levels.
Today the group consists of brothers Jorge Hernandez (director, lead vocals, accordion), Hernan Hernandez (electric bass, vocals), Eduardo Hernández – accordion, saxophone, bajo sexto, vocals), and Luis Hernández (bajo sexto, vocals) along with cousin Oscar Lara (drums). Together, the band and its public have turned norteño music into an international genre. The band has evolved with the times by modernizing its sound with the inclusion of bolero, cumbia, rock rhythms and waltzes. They have also integrated machine guns and sirens into the music.
