Hunter girls come in large numbers for soccer tryouts
The Hunter girls soccer team had more girls show up to try out for the team this year than it did last year, and head coach Sue Christensen hopes that leads to more success on the field this season.
“We have some new and impressive girls on the team this year,” Christensen said.
This year’s team consists of 20 returning players and 18 new players. The team has set the goal of reaching the state playoffs this year.
“We really would like to place well enough in the region this year to go to state,” Christensen said. “This team has not been able to play in the playoffs for some time.”
Last year the Wolverines ended the seasons with a record of 5-9 with two tied games.
The team’s strong points are its forwards this year. Stephanie Figueroa, a sophomore, is positioned as a forward on the outside wings. Christensen said she is an aggressive player, as well as a good shot.
“We have a lot of returning seniors this year that make the team really stable,” she said.
The Wolverines played their first preseason game against Brighton at Cottonwood Heights on Aug. 9 where they lost to the perennial powerhouse 8-0. Their next preseason game was Aug. 12 at Syracuse. There will be four more preseason games before the first region game Sept. 1 at West.
Hunter will try and improve on its 5-9-2 record from a year ago.
